John Bramwell

John Bramwell is a singer-songwriter, best known as the frontman for the former three-piece alternative rock band and Mercury Prize nominated I Am Kloot. Having released solo material from as early as the late 1980’s, he stepped away from I Am Kloot in 2016 to focus on his solo career.

His debut full studio album was ‘Leave Alone The Empty Spaces’, a stunning showcase of John’s skilful, widely acclaimed song-writing and his unique voice. The album is inspired by the spirit of liberty, independence, adventure and solitude that John has enjoyed on the road, as well as the diverse emotions that escape and travel can bring about – from sadness to exhilaration.

His live show is testament to that too. Audiences can expect a highly personal experience from a performer who has completely immersed himself in the experience of connecting with live audiences of all kinds. This adventure has taken John to little rooms above pubs (after promising a fan he would play in their town that ‘doesn’t have gigs’) to World War II underground bunkers in Germany.

His own performances has seen him support the likes of Liam Gallagher, and the reformation of Twisted Wheel saw them release the acclaimed ‘Satisfying The Ritual’ back in 2020.

Déjà Vega

Déjà Vega are vocalist and guitarist Jack Fearon, drummer Tom Webster and bassist Mike Newton. After forming in Cheshire, they made the short journey to Manchester, a fitting backdrop to their gritty, guitar led psychedelia. Rhythmic and rage-fuelled and boasting surging riffs, Fearon's hypnotic slurring lyrics lurch in and out of poetic chants, battling over chaotic drums and the razor-sharp bass lines underneath.

You could spend all day trying to work out who Deja sound like – what genre they fit into – but you’d be completely wasting your time. Truth is they’re completely unique, from punchy punk rhythms to more reverb and delay than Kevin Shields could shake a stick at, it’s just pure ear porn ready and waiting for you; but don’t worry about mum and dad finding this collection! Show them, they’ll probably enjoy it too. Live, Déjà Vega demonstrate that they're a force to be reckoned with.

Pavey Ark_promo-min.png

Pavey Ark

PAVEY ARK are an alt-folk band from Hull. Atmospheric vocals and strings glide over finger-picked guitar, melodic bass and complex percussion. The result is a beautiful folk-inspired sound that evades immediate comparison, but upon further listening, the band's wide range of influences start to reveal themselves. From the 60’s folk of Jack.C.Frank, Michael Chapman and Rodrigues through to Nick Drake, This Is The Kit and Radiohead.

Their debut album "Close Your Eyes and Think of Nothing” was released on 20th March, just as the Covid-19 lockdown began in the UK. Despite the challenging timing and the cancelled shows, the album received wonderful reviews from national press including Uncut Magazine and Folk Radio. With BBC 6 music airplay from Mark Radcliffe and Chris Hawkins under their belt and a gorgeous debut album the band are excited to get back on the road again in 2021.

The band have been booked for Glastonbury, Cornbury, Bearded Theory, Boomtown Fair, Deer Shed and Moseley Folk Festival. Recent support slots include This Is The Kit, Badly Drawn Boy and Steve Mason.

Karakana are a 5 piece band from Pontefract, UK, consisting of frontman Ryan Holland, guitarists Matthew Law and Adam Nelson, bassist Niall Deravairere and drummer Joe Agar.

With a wide range of influences, the band create an eclectic indie rock sound utilising melodic guitar parts and vocal harmonies. Having supported Pete Doherty, The Sherlocks and Glass Caves to name a few, the band are establishing themselves as an exciting live act on the northern scene. The band started writing music together in Joe's garage, and they formed the band KARAKANA meaning 'garage' in Swahili.

With their initial two single releases ‘Brothers’ and ‘Baby Blue’ as well as selling out their debut show in a matter of hours at Eiger Studios, the band are establishing themselves as an exciting live act on the northern scene. They had this to say about their first single of 2021:

“'Misbehaving' is a song about regret and making amends. Nights out can be unpredictable, and sometimes you don't realise what you've done until the morning after. This song was first presented to us by our drummer Joe, he came to us with the chorus and we really like how it slowed down and sped back up. We knew instantly that this was something special” - Niall.

They have just released another single 'Lonely', with Niall commenting on the single with this:

"Joe sat down towards the end of last year with the intention of writing a big indie tune. He struggled with it for most of the week and didn’t seem to be getting anywhere. Then on the Friday when he was out the melody for 'Lonely' came to him. He rushed home and the rest of the song fell into place. He sent the rest of us the demo and now it’s one of our favourite tunes."

Mega Happy

In the spring of 2021, Leeds duo Mega Happy started work on their forthcoming mini album, Please Don’t Be My Dreams, striking a depth of maturity with a cohesive sound that many artists who are albums deep into their discography only flirt with.

Their first single from the mini album, “Have You Seen Her”, was released recently to rave reviews, major radio play and was celebrated with a sold out show at Hyde Park Book Club.

“We’re really proud of what we’ve created here as a piece of art. The songs stretch back from the inception of the band to the forefront of what we’re creating currently, all whilst maintaining a strong sense of cohesiveness. The themes that run throughout the piece neatly tie it together and imbue it with our identity as a band. It’s a manifestation of one our core philosophies to create something that you would want to listen to yourself. This is something we always wanted to hear and no one else is making, so we’re unbelievably pleased to be able to share it with the world.” – Mega Happy

As well as working away on their debut record, they have been making their presence known as a live act, engaging audiences across the UK, most notably performing sold out shows at Rough Trade in Nottingham as well as performing with indie scene mainstays such as Blondes and Red Rum Club.

Please Don’t Be My Dreams was released November 12th 2021 and is available on 12” vinyl exclusively through us here at The Vinyl Whistle - it is on black vinyl and limited to 250 copies worldwide. The record is in collaboration with Mönch Records too.
