WaxTime Records presents Blue Train, Giant Steps and Ballads as part of a 3LP Boxset.

Born in Hamlet, North Carolina, in 1926 (he died prematurely in 1967 at the age of 40), Coltrane played in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, helped pioneer the use of modes, and was at the forefront of free jazz. He first gained prominence as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet and the Thelonious Monk Quartet, and in 1960 he started his career as a leader by forming his own sublime quartet. He remains one of the most influential saxophonists in music history.

My music is the spiritual expressionof what I am—my faith, my knowledge, my being…When you begin to see the possibilities of music, you desire to do something really good for people, to help humanity free itself from its hangups… I want to speak to their souls.” John Coltrane
